Around Eboshi Resort

Zao Mountain Range is part of the Ou Mountain Range. Located at its foot, the vicinity of Eboshi Resort has not only majestic scenery created by volcanic activity, but is also Togatta Hot Spring, one of Miyagi Prefecture’s great hot spring areas. Togatta is also said to be the birthplace of “kokeshi” dolls, and remains rooted in the culture even now. Experience Japanese culture here.

Zao Okama

A round crater lake surrounded by the three peaks of Mts. Zao Kattadake, Kumanodake, and Goshikidake. It was named Okama for its shape, which resembles a caldron. The surface of the lake is emerald green, a mystifying contrast to the rough walls of the crater.

Togatta Hot Spring

Located at the eastern foot of the Zao Mountain Range, this hot spring opened in 1601. The hot spring town has public baths, ryokans, hotels, souvenir shops, and restaurants all in a row. We recommend strolling around town, and it is popular with tourists since they can sample a number of eateries and cafés.

Zao Dairy Center (Zao Cheese Factory)

Zao Dairy Center produces dairy products and such aged cheeses as cream cheese, fresh cheese, and gouda cheese, and they are sold at the farmers’ market. There is also a restaurant where you can enjoy items from the menu that use Zao cheese.

Miyagi Zao Kokeshi Museum

Not only traditional Togatta kokeshi dolls but traditional kokeshi and wooden toys from all over Japan are part of a systematic display of 5,500 pieces. Activities include a corner for watching current day kokeshi craftspeople work on the lathe, and being able to personally paint a face on a blank kokeshi doll.
